Wrapping Up an Incredible Season of Chalkpoints in Local YMCAs
As our fall YMCA season (and football season) comes to a close, it’s hard not to reflect with gratitude, pride, and a whole lot of excitement for what’s ahead.
This season was about so much more than fantasy football. It was about learning, confidence, teamwork, and community - and watching kids grow in ways that go far beyond the scoreboard.
More Than a Game
Through our Chalkpoints programs at various YMCAs across the Triangle region of North Carolina, students weren’t just drafting players or tracking stats. They were:
Building math and analytical skills through scoring, probability, and data comparison
Learning economic concepts like value, scarcity, and decision-making
Practicing communication and collaboration through group discussions and friendly competition
Developing confidence by asking questions, explaining their thinking, and leading conversations
For many kids, this was their first time realizing that a silly little game about a game - fantasy football - can also be a powerful learning tool.
Growth You Could See
One of the most rewarding parts of the season was watching the transformation week over week. Kids who started out shy or unsure were soon:
Debating player choices with confidence
Helping peers understand scoring rules
Taking ownership of their teams and decisions
Celebrating each other’s wins (and learning from losses)
That growth is exactly why Chalkpoints exists. The program proved effective even for students with no prior interest or knowledge of football, highlighting its accessibility and educational impact.

Looking Ahead
While this YMCA season may be ending, this is only the beginning.
We’re taking everything we learned - from curriculum improvements to engagement strategies - and using it to build even stronger programs in the future. That includes expanded YMCA offerings, school-based programs, live draft events, and online classes designed to meet kids where they are.
Chalkpoints is about creating inclusive, fun, and educational spaces where kids can learn life skills through the lens of sports - and this season reaffirmed just how impactful that mission can be.
